Exploring a Health Equity Framework with a Health Literacy Lens

Gabriela Flores, MSM and Angie Knackstedt, RN give an overview of health literacy’s fundamental intersection with health equity.

PLEASE NOTE: This session is intended for a broad audience from diverse organizations.

Gabriela Flores has twenty-five years of experience working in the area of health and human services, specifically with refugee and immigrant populations in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Her area of emphasis has been in language access, diversity and health equity. Ms. Flores currently serves as the Director for the Office of Equity and Diversity at Children’s Mercy- Kansas City, where role is to create and implement an organizational framework across the health system focusing on health equity, diversity and inclusion. Ms. Flores holds a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, a Master’s in Business Management, and has completed the American Hospital Association’s Cultural Competency Leadership Fellowship (2006). Ms. Flores is also a KC Chamber Centurion Alumni.

Angela (Angie) Knackstedt, BSN, RN, NPD-BC is the Program Manager of Health Literacy and Nursing Bioethics at Children’s Mercy. Her nursing career has had a focus on nursing professional staff development, bioethics, health literacy, pediatric oncology, injury prevention and advocacy. Dividing her time between the Office of Equity and Diversity and the Bioethics Center, she directs of the hospital’s health literacy efforts, leads the efforts of the Nursing Ethics Forum within the organization and collaborates nationally with other nurse ethicists, co-directs the Children’s Mercy Certificate Program in Pediatric Bioethics and is part of the core faculty, and is certified in Nursing Professional Development.
