Overview/Background: On March 24, 2017, Advance African Development in collaboration with partnering agencies offered a one-day symposium attended by over 60 key stakeholders and titled: Disseminating K-12 Health Literacy Efforts: A Learning Collaborative for Key Stakeholders. Symposium proceedings: 1. Explored the benefits of using National Library of Medicine resources in K-12 school settings; 2. Established a learning collaborative made up of targeted key stakeholders; 3. Shared, learnt, and built on existing strategies that have been successfully used to integrate health literacy concepts into the K-12 school curricula; 4. Identified current and persistent K-12 health literacy gaps; and 5. Called to action for greater impact for sustainable health outcomes. In Pennsylvania and because of COVID-19 Pandemic, schools were shut down on March 13, 2020, followed by the mandated “Shelter-In Place,” and our lives came to a standstill including the students we love to work with. Begin of 2020-2021 school year saw us offering remote learning. It has both its many challenges and some successes affecting us all including our students. While we continue to advocate and promote equity in our society, unfortunately COVID-19 crisis magnified the effects and harsh realities of health disparities experienced by minority community members.
Why Now: Now is the time to reconvene and re-evaluate our Next Steps as we continue to deal with COVID-19 crisis, its vaccine hesitancy, coupled by a lot of misinformation and disinformation. Our goal for this follow-up is to collectively take stock of what transpired between March 24, 2017 to present, and forge ahead with this agenda to promote and Disseminate K-12 Health Literacy Efforts: A Learning Collaborative Key Stakeholders in an inclusive and collaborative manner.
